Caring for the needs of 42+ horses is an enormous job, one that Happy Dog Ranch couldn’t
accomplish without the help of volunteers. In 2017, HDR volunteers worked 4870 hours.
Each day our volunteers assist staff with a wide variety of chores, including:
All volunteers are provided with an orientation and are assigned responsibilities according to
their level of experience. Volunteers are also offered opportunities, such as groundwork lessons
and workshop/clinic participation, to grow in their abilities.
And for those volunteers who have been with us a certain amount of time and can demonstrate
riding experience, there’s always a horse that is eager to be saddled up.
HDR does not offer riding lessons to the public. We do offer beginner lessons to volunteers who have consistently work at the ranch for six or months.
The majority of volunteers come to us though Kathleen June’s Connecting Women and Horses
Meetup page that provides monthly opportunities for “Horse Hungry” women and/or prospective volunteers to visit
the ranch, see what we do, and meet our amazing horses.
All HDR volunteers must complete and submit a volunteer application and a liability waiver. Bring these to orientation when scheduled. Volunteers must be 15 yrs old or older. Because of our small staff, we allow 2-3 teen volunteers during summer months only.
